When the summer sun sets over the azure waters of Lake Tahoe, there’s no better place to enjoy classic theatre than the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. This award-winning Festival is one of Lake Tahoe’s most beloved annual events, luring thousands to the scenic outdoor venue at Sand Harbor State Park.
The Festival’s Quintessential setting with an incredible viewscape of grass-covered dunes giving way to the granite cove beach and the deep blue lake beyond, the Festival’s backdrop alone is worth the price of admission. As evening falls, the surrounding mountains and shimmering lake are illuminated by the setting sun, providing stunning natural scenery unlike any other theatrical venue.
The Festival’s lineup features two spectacular productions. Shakespeare’s hilarious comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor will have audiences roaring with laughter at the outrageous antics and misadventures of the infamous Sir John Falstaff. The season will also include the musical Always…Patsy Cline is a heartwarming tribute to legendary country singer Patsy Cline and her devoted fans.
Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival also provides two educational outreach programs annually, reaching over 7,000 young people in the Lake Tahoe region. In the summer, the Festival produces the “D. G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program,” an interactive adaptation for children of a Shakespeare play performed at Sand Harbor and other locations around Lake Tahoe. During the academic school year, the Festival provides an in-school residency in Shakespeare and the classics, “InterACT,” to regional schools.
